WDYTO these Mayflower names?
I was looking at the list of Mayflower pilgrims and they had some unusual names other than the Mary's and John's.For women there is Constance, Love, Remember, and Resolved. For men Peregrine and Degory / Digory.Constance isn't so unusual but I wanted to include it since it was the only other virtue name. What do you think of these names?
I didn't even realize that Remember and Resolved were used as virtue names, my brain has a hard time accepting them as names. The other thing that struck me is how virtue names seem so puritan but also very hippy in my mind. If I didn't see where those names were from Love, Remember, and Resolved my first reaction would be children named by hippy parents. Remembrance strikes me as a possible virtue name in between Constance and Remember. I think Remember and Resolved are interesting virtues to impart to your daughters. I like Constance and Love but I have a hard time accepting Remember and Resolved as names.I also wanted to add that I love Peregrine as a name. Will always make me think of the bird and of Peregrine Took. Digory / Degory makes me think of Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter. Don't like it or dislike it.
EDITED: For women there is Constance, Humility, and Remember. For men Peregrine, Degory / Digory, Love and Resolved.

When I was younger, one of my favourite Dear America books was about a pilgrim girl named Remember Patience and her best friend is named Humility. They refer to each other as "Mem" and "Hummy." There is a baby named Peregrine in the book, but the other names I think were all traditional "boring" names.I kind of like Resolved. Not for actual use, but in theory.

You forgot Love's brother, Wrestling (other brother Jonathan, and sisters Patience and Fear). A name that is still being passed down in the Brewster family. Of the names you've mentioned I have to say I love Resolved and Remember.

I wonder if Wrestling die before having children or never ended up marrying because he wasn't on the list either.

I've lived in Malawi and many of the popular English first names (and their vernacular equivalent) are very Mayflower. Eg I know people named Love, Remember / Memory / Remnant, and Constance. I don't think of Constance as being Puritan though. How great is Peregine, can we all just appreciate it? Also, I would love a dog named Diggory or Digby. I don't like Humility. Urgh. Humble is kinda cool, on a boy.

I think any discussion of interesting Mayflower names would be incomplete without the mention of Oceanus Hopkins, the only baby born during the sea crossing. Learning about this little guy back in elementary school marks the beginning of my love of unusual names.

Huh I wonder if he died before having children. I didn't see him on the list of Mayflower passengers who have living ancestors.Humility also wasn't on the list because she died before having children.I do really love Oceanus.

Resolved and Love were boys. The father of Love also had a daughter called Fear and a son called Wrestling! Maybe some wrestling fans will revive it :)Constance is nice, Peregrine is handsome and I've got a soft spot for Digory because of The Magician's Nephew. Remember/Remembrance seem pretty odd in a modern context - what exactly is being remembered? Could be anything. If it was to remember a loved one, it would make much more sense to just give them the person's name.

Sorry I guess I just assumed, forgot I was going to look into their genders.I guess there was a female named Humility on the Mayflower who ended up going back to England.Wrestling and Fear are very unusual names. Fear as a daughters name is especially unusual for those days I would think. Humility, Constance, and Remember at least seem like more appropriate choices for a puritan girl.

If you're talking about Love, Fear, and Wrestling Brewster, they're my distant aunt and uncles. All of the unusual names had some sort of religious meaning. I've seen lists of Puritan names that had Fear-me-not-for-I-am-the-Lord or Wrestling-with-the-devil. I've also seen Love's name as Truelove, not just Love.
