Name help for a girl
I need help with a name. I have two ideas but each have a possible problem and I need opinions on the name and possible ideas.
I should begin by explaining that I'm writing a story about a girl who's mother gets killed while she is pregnant with the baby and she has to be born early. She's in the hospital for a while since she was born like a pound (I'm still figuring it out) and she then is raised by her grandpa, because her dad isn't in the picture.
Now with that background, the first idea is naming her Mackenzie Alicia. Alicia would be after her mother and Mackenzie would be after her grandma but I don't know if that would be weird having the grandpa name his granddaughter after his dead wife. (Note: it doesn't have to be after the grandmother, just an idea but the mother's name can't be a first name).
My other idea is name her something that means "miracle", "survivor", "hope". I know babies aren't named by traits or anything, but in this case the mother didn't have any idea what she was naming the child when she was killed. So the grandpa could name her something or the nurses who cared for her could. But if I do that, I don't know if that'll be considered to be Mary Sueish.
Advice on which route to go, if second way, name ideas!
Thanks in advances.

Well, I would have a hard time believing that Mackenzie was the name of teh grandmother - unless it was her last name. Mackenzie was barely in use in the 50s to 70s (which would be grandmother age right now)... and only came into popularity starting in the 80s. I could believe that the mother was named Mackenzie... but for a story I would pick a name that has a bit more feeling. As a surname, Mackenzie is totaly believable. All of that matters little (in my opinion) since the Grandfather would likely choose a significant first name like you suggested. It would not me Mary-Sueish at all... since it would be almost expected. So - virtue names would work here for sure. What might be a little more emotional and cute would be a nickname that the nurses used because the Grandfather was so upset and didn't name her right away. Then he decided to either use a variation of the nickname as her full name (and still call her by the nickname) or just named her the nickname. My suggestion would be Brighty, which can be on its own (I know one) or a nickname for Bridget.
Maybe she has a bright smile or bright blue eyes that capture the hearts of the nurses and her Grandfather despite the situation. In any case - good luck!

First off, thank you. The idea abut the nurses giving her a nickname was a great idea. I need to still figure out what it is and all since they would figure out a name like Lily or Lucy (something short and sweet). Anyway, it's helpful. BTW, the story takes place a few decade in the future, so that's why Mackenzie could've been the grandma's name.

So I thought of a name and I wanted your opinion on it. I was thinking that she could've had the nickname Jem because she had these blue eyes that made her stand out despite being red (because she was a premature baby). Then her name be Jemma.
By the way, I have a terrible memory. So, please remind me, did you think I should have her middle name be her mother's? (Jemma Alicia)
Thanks

I like that idea... though I would likely use Gemma (Gem) instead. But my Italian-ness dictates that change. "What a little Gem/Jem" is a great way to instigate the name, good idea. I love the idea of using the mom's name as a middle.
Alicia was pretty popular in the 80s and 90s so it would work on a woman having babies now... but if this is a couple of decades from now - I might go with something that is mainstream at the moment. Alexis, Alyssa, and Alexandra are all similar and currently in the top 100. That said, I would believe an Alicia being born today.

I like the mother's name for the middle name. But I'm not sure i really care for either first name you have. Naming her something with the meaning of hope or miracle feels a bit cliche. But at the same time, I don't really love the idea of giving her the grandmother's name either. Maybe the grandpa gives her the name of one of the nurses that cared for her. Or maybe there was a name he and his wife had picked out should they ever have another daughter. Or maybe, if he's religious and the baby is born on a certain Saint's day and he names her for that. I like the idea of the name being her own.

I like the idea of the grandfather using honoring names. Picking a name with a meaning like 'miracle' or what have you is pretty Sueish and cliche. Honestly, I think the best course would to give her an original name, so she's an individual not marred by her mothers or grandmother's death. Having her middle name be her mother's is fitting though.
