My dad wanted me to be Sarah Anne, after his mother who had recently died. My mum wasn't about to name me after her mother-in-law but wouldn't admit it straight out, so just kept stone-walling and on viewing me for the first time announced the name of her choice; spontaneously, she claimed. Lucky for me - I find Sarah very dull, and I'd have had initials SAD too, just like granny.

I asked them once what I'd have been called if I'd been a boy, and they got very embarrassed and admitted that they'd never given it a thought. My guess is that Thomas would have come into it somewhere, since both their fathers were Thomases.
