I keep coming back to Roland- ETA another option
I go back and forth with middle names I like with it. Right now I like Solomon for multiple reasons...the meaning, the biblical reference, the fact that he was a son of David (dh is David), and I just find it "cool." I also would really like to use my maiden name as a second mn. That would make the full combo Roland Solomon Gilliland H***n. Is it too "n-heavy"? Or would the personal significance of all the names override the flow (or lack thereof)? What about Roland Ariel Gilliland. Is Ariel too "little mermaid"?-------------------
Love my little sparrow, Caemlyn Sparrow Gail; my Hucklebaby, David Royce Huckleberry "Huck"; and my Rain, forever in my heart

Okay, you're just going to have to have two more boys, Roland and Solomon. Problem solved. ;)Personally, I love Solomon and very much like Roland. Understand your wanting to use your maiden name and, honestly, I think significance can overcome other issues when you really love the names. For me, "l" is a bigger issue than "n/nd" when trying to put Roland Solomon Gilliland or Roland Ariel Gilliland together.I get "lion" from Ariel, personally, and perceived the name as masculine prior to mermaid use, but most people will associate it with the mermaid. Is that really a big problem for a middle name? I don't think so.I do like Roland Josiah a lot, but the end of Josiah into Ariel bugs me a bit. Josiah is very handsome and avoids repeating the "l"s.I don't think you should pressure yourself to create a "namenerd perfect" name for your child. Just be certain you can fully let go of any minor issues you see now and not have them nagging at the back of your brain for the rest of your life.

I really don't enjoy Ariel for either boy or girl, but I do find it more Israeli politician (male, in spades) than Disney mermaid! And I'd be sad to see your maiden name disappear, especially since it's such an unusual and attractive one.In your place, I think I'd ignore the n-heaviness - which isn't intrusive anyway - and ditch Ariel. The flow of Roland Solomon Gilliland seems just fine to me. But if the n aspect bugs you, and since it's a mn anyway and more for relevance than daily use, then might you consider using Shlomo instead of Solomon? It's very Israel, more so than Solomon, but also very authentic and, I think, very cool indeed.Roland Shlomo Gilliland H***n? Works for me! Granted, you now get an echoed o sound rather than a bunch of n sounds, but mns are mostly written rather than said, so neither one should be an issue really.

Oh! What if I drop...Gilliland and make the combo Roland Josiah Ariel? Wdyto?

Roland Josiah Ariel is a great combo, I like it a lot.

I like this combo much better than with Gilliland.

Roland Josiah Ariel is quite incredible, actually! I like how Ariel softens the whole combo.
Someone else suggested Errol farther down somewhere. What about Roland Josiah Errol or Roland Josiah Erol. You would still get the R and L, but knock off one syllable/sound to shorten it a bit. And with one r it means brave, which is cool and could easily lend itself to a theme Bible verse.

YES!This is nice!!I love all three names together. The Josiah Ariel part makes me swoon, so soft but handsome at the same time!

I'm not keen on the two ah sounds squashed together at the end of Josiah and start of Ariel... they kind of blend into one and become a mush. Roland Ariel Josiah I think is nicer, but it's sad to drop Gilliland. It's so cool and you have a great excuse to use it!

Roland Josiah Your Maiden Name, I think. My second grandson has two middle names, the second one being his mother's maiden name. Go for it. Much better than Ariel. That sounds so feminine.

Why not use Solomon for the fn instead? Especially if you want to use Gilliland and your maiden name too. Ariel is still very tied to The Little Mermaid, but that wouldn't stop me from using it. It would be a mn anyway, so no dramas imo.

1. Dh's boss is Saul, and it's too close for comfort for dh, especially knowing he'd probably be called Sol.
2. I'm quite attached to Roland from Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Gilliland is my maiden name, so it would Roland Middlename Gilliland Lastname

Euh, I never did like Roland much. There's nothing wrong with it, but to me its lacking in colour and flavour. It's kind of like breadfruit, all white and thick and starchy. But that wasn't really what you were asking. I think Solomon is seriously cool. If it was me, I'd use Solomon for the first name and Sol or Solly for short.
Gilliland is brilliant. At the moment I'm kind of getting into surnames (with meaning, like maiden names) being used as middle names. Gilliland has a such a great sound.
I'd totally use Solomon Gilliland.Roland Solomon Gilliland Lastname IS kind of a lot. If I saw it or heard it I'd be like woaa... too much! But, personal meaning can definitely overrule flow. In the end, I think it would be how much the lack of flow would bother you.
It's really, really L heavy too.I love Ariel, when it's said AH-ree-el and not AIR-ee-el like they do in the Little Mermaid. I like Ari a little more, though. And I think Roland Ari Gilliland flows better. Gives you a break from the Ls.

I'd LOVE to use Solomon nn Solly, but dh's boss is Saul, and it's too close for dh's liking. And Ariel would definitely be the "ah" not "air" pronunciation.

Aw, bad luck :/ Personally I'd use Solomon anyway despite bosses, but that's just me.Yay :D I admit people saying "air" for ari- names is a pet peeve for me.

Ariel is much better when pronounced AR-iel instead of AIR-iel. The second pronunciation makes me cringe.

Yeahh, me too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this!

Roland is very handsome and underused. :) I'd say yes, significance can override the lack of flow. Definitely. And no judgement here on that front.Personally, it would bug me so I would probably keep tweaking. How about Roland Gill Solomon (between Roland and Gill you get almost all of Gilliland)?

What about Roland Ariel?
Thinking about Roland Gill Solomon, though.

Any meaning to Ariel? The flow is good. A lot of the same sounds, but in a nice echo-y way.

David's parents are Ricky and Melissa "Lissy". I was saying in my head that I need an "r and l" name and in my head, it morphed to Ariel.

How about Micky? I actually think Roland Micky / Mickey has a really quaint, "huggable" sound :)Roland Micky Solomon
Roland Riley
Roland Errol / Erol?Just spitballing :)To answer your OP, I think Roland Solomon, and Roland Solomon Gilliland are both too 'n' AND 'l' heavy, but significance can outweigh, of that's something you value more.

Plus it has great Biblical meaning.

OOo, and I like the David & Solomon thing.

It's very clunky but personal significance always trumps flow in my books.

Agree. And, I would like to add that my daughter has a very long name, and so will all of my future (!) children. The length is the result of significance - so I am totally on board.

What about Roland Ariel?

I like it quite a bit and it flows nicely. I think Ariel softens Roland's more macho appearance.I saw your meaning behind Ariel on your reply to kudriashkajo and feel that makes it all the better!

If I'm honest, it does feel clunky/heavy.I think a different middle name than Solomon would do a lot in this case. I would go with either Roland or Solomon, both are fantastic.
