The mother is the one who calls the shots, the "dominant" one in the relationship. She's slightly hippie-ish, but she has low tolerance for people who do stupid things or rub her the wrong way. People often mistake her directness for bitchiness, until they get to know her better. The father is quiet, mild-mannered, teaches high school, or holds a middle-management job somewhere. The couple is more middle America than they like to think, and their kids are all exceptional in some way, and spend a lot of time doing after-school activities. Lachlan is the black sheep, somehow. That's the impression I get.
