Sound-wise, I can't say Vale does much for me, but I do enjoy the nature imagery it brought to mind when I read it, though I can't say that imagery would be triggered by merely hearing it. Reading Vail brought a bride to mind (despite the spelling); I would guess many folks would tend to see a bride's veil upon hearing the name called out at the park, etc., or perhaps think of skiing.

I'm not one who really studies popularity trends but I'd be surprised if Vale/Vail became all the rage.

I can't say I'd call it "fresh" (aside from the nature imagery induced by seeing the word) or "exciting", certainly not "expected", but perhaps it does fit the "trendy" category in the sense that word names seem to be on the rise.
