Nia
Have you ever cared more about your character's name than the character themselves? (Assuming if you do write)And sorry this may be a tad bit strange.
I have this character named Nia (I'm choosing to pronounce it as Nigh-uh and NOT nee-uh) Nigh rhymes with My and then uh at the end
I don't hate this character. She still means something to me but not as strongly as my other characters. I mean every character an author has created means something to them. Usually. She just doesn't provide as much.
I had originally planned to kill her off during my second book (not an actual book lol. Just printed out pages placed in a binder) but I became so enthralled with her name. Nia is a very, very uncommon and unusual and many people have never heard of it before at least where i'm from. I never heard of it before and how I ended up coming acrossed it, I'll never know. I think it was that I thought I had made up the name and it wasn't until later, I found out it was a legit name. Usually pronounced as nee-uh.
I mean I ended up killing off this character named Ridge in place of Nia I guess you can say, which was an completely unplanned scene and he meant more to me. Nia's death scene was plotted out for a good while but it just never happened. Me: "nooo, her name is so beautiful."
Maybe I'll kill her later on in the series.Soooo yeah. Has that ever happened to you?
Also, would you ever give your characters a name you personally hated or disliked? I only would if I truelly hated the character or if the character meant absolutely nothing to me. Or was just an uniportant extra.
But for the characters I take to the heart, it has to be a name that I usually LOVE or at least can completely tolerate.Your thoughts?

The name fits the character, the character is not defined by the name in my writing. Therefore, their f ate is rested solely on their journey, not their moniker. I would be more likely to use a name I love for a character who will be significant. However, I often use names that I am not even fond of, just because it matches the character in my head. Also, there are not very many names I don't like - except for kea8tive ones. If I every felt the urge to use a kre8tive name in a story, the burden of having such a name would likely be part of the character's personality. Also, I like the name Nia, but always saw it spelled Naya. It's a pretty sound, but not enough to keep a character breathing if her time has come.

Fy enw i yw Nia!Sorry about the sudden Welsh. I just had to... I felt the urge.
Actually where I live Nia is very common! (I'm Welsh, here we pronounce it nee-a and it's a variant of Niamh.) My name is Nia and I know two other Nias and one whose middle name is Nia.
I would never not kill a character because I like their name. The name's in print, I can think about it. In fact most of my characters have names I'm not fussed about, I give them names based on what I think their parents would call them. If I gave them all names I like, I would have to base all my writing in France for it to be even slightly realistic! So yes, I would give characters names I dislike. In a piece of writing I did recently the main character's love interest is Ursule, which I prefer to Ursula, but used to hate and still don't really like. (Still, I made up for it by calling the main character Anouk which is a top favourite!)
I think you should do what you like with your story, but just make sure you're not changing it too much for the sake of a name.
