Re: bird names + one more
in reply to a message by Katie
Sparrow- I think this would be particularly cute as a middle name. I don't know if it's usable as a first name.
Wren- Completely usable, though again I like it best as a middle name.
Falcon- For me, it's not very usable. It sounds very in-your-face, macho to me, and I don't care for it.
Kestrel- I've thought about this one a little myself. I think it's usable but would certainly be a very unusual name.
Avis- It's usable. I find it to have almost an "old lady" sound, which I like.
Aetius- I've never heard of this. The way I'm pronouncing it sounds like "ate us," so for that reason I'd say it's unusable, unless I'm pronouncing it wrong.
Branwen- Totally usable. I'm a bigger fan of Bronwen, myself.
Raven- Also totally usable. I kind of like it, as well as Ravenna.
Jay- It's 100% usable, just not very interesting to me.
Paloma- I think it's beautiful and usable.
Phoenix- It's usable. I don't care for it, myself.
Robin- Usable. I prefer it for a boy. Reminds me of Robin Williams and Christopher Robin.
Tawny- I think it's somewhat usable, but I'm not a fan, personally. It sounds childish.
Ibis- I think it's usable on about the same level as Kestrel.
Merle- Usable, though I think some might have trouble pronouncing it. It's not as straightforward as it looks, to non namenerds.
Starling- I'd keep it in the middle name spot, like Sparrow.
Eider- I haven't heard of it, but I guess it's fairly usable. It seems to have an intuitive spelling and pronunciation.
Avocet- On the other hand, I foresee a lot of pronunciation trouble with this one. I do think it looks rather lovely, though.
Merlin- Too tied to the Arthurian character to be taken seriously. Not usable, unless it's a pet.
Peregrine- I think it's somewhat usable. I relate it to the Lord of the Rings character.
Eagle- I don't find this usable. It's too literal.
Heron- Same here.
Piper- It's definitely usable and quite popular. Personally, I don't find it substantial enough as a name to use it.
Jack- Obviously usable, but needs a rest. Too many little Jacks running around these days.
Osprey- Don't think it's usable. The sound would be rather unusual.
Martin- Definitely usable. Still a bit retro.
Rosefinch- It would qualify as a GP, but I think as a middle name it would be fine. I'm pretty much of the "anything goes" belief for middle names, and Rosefinch is quite pretty.
Skylark- It's really only one letter away from Skylar, so I'd say it's usable.Unfortunately, I am not a fan of Aurora. I think it's a beautiful meaning, but I find it awkward to say.
