I like the premise of the character so far. Ari, Cade or Dee all could work as possible nick names for Arcadius. Are you certain about the nick name having to be derived from his actual name? He could have an unusual real name and a completely unrelated nick name. For instance C.S. (Clive Staples) Lewis went by Jack. No connection with his real name whatsoever.

You could look at the Anglo-Saxon, Ancient Scandanavian and muthological names for inspiration. They have a lot of names that you rarely see these days.
