Shoshana: once and for all
Is it usable for someone who is not of Jewish decent?
I feel like I've briefly mentioned my concerns about this before, but I want some definitive opinions as I just adore the name. I don't mind Susana / Susannah, but I wouldn't be inclined to use it.
I'm loving the combination Shoshana Ruby, which is odd as I'm normally not a fan of S + R together.
Much obliged!

I think it's just fine.
Shoshana is a great name.
As someone that married into a Jewish family/community, I have often wanted to give my children Hebrew/Jewish middle names. So many of them are Biblical, too, so they are often used between both Christians of many ethnic/national backgrounds, so I don't think it is impossible to blur the lines with Hebrew/Jewish names genearlly.
However, it does have a more culturally Jewish feel than a lot of other names, just because it isn't as widely used.
I don't think anyone Jewish I know would be offended by its use, though your child might be assumed to be Jewish.
Does this make sense? Feels rambley. I apologize. Haha.

Not rambley at all! Thank you for the insight!
I adore Shoshana. I think it's usable for a non-Jewish person. It's not too strange, not religious and it's just a lovely name.
I don't like Ruby, but Shoshana Ruby sounds very nice.

Ah, thank you!
I LOVE the name Shoshana and have since I was a kid. You've really got me with Shoshana Ruby, as Ruby was my fave name for years and the name I wanted to give my future DD. I have a 10 year old niece named Ruby though, so won't ever be able to use it. I would prefer Ruby Shoshana, just because I prefer the combo in that order. I absolutely think Shoshana is usable for someone who is not Jewish, most definitely.
Bwah, I'd be all over Ruby Shoshana if Ruby weren't so popular here! It was my favourite for years, too.
Thank you!
Thank you!
I love Shoshana, it's such a gorgeous name! Shoshana Ruby is pretty, although I feel like Ruby is kinda wimpy in comparison.
I would certainly expect a Shoshana to be Jewish, but if I met one who wasn't it wouldn't bother me. I'd just be excited because I love that name! But I'm also not Jewish, so my opinion might not be valid.

Really? I think Ruby is really brassy!
Thank you! :)
Thank you! :)
I really like it too. It grew on me when I went through a stage of watching lots of episodes of Girls in a row.
I know it's a Jewish community name, but I wouldn't personally find it weird to meet a Shoshana who wasn't Jewish. I kinda see it in the same way I see Saskia, yes it's dutch, but if I met an English Saskia I wouldn't think 'wow that's weird'

I totally binge-watched the first series of Girls, despite my better judgement. Is it worth continuing with, do you think?
I actually knew an English Saskia, though I think she was of Dutch/German descent, so I guess that doesn't count!
Thank you!

I got through the second series also, but had to force myself towards the end. It's a weird show isn't it, almost so bad it's good. I've never returned to it to watch the later episodes though
Yeah, all the while I was watching it, I was struggling to decide whether it was good or not. I had to watch it, though, because the box set was a birthday gift :P The ending of the first series kind of bummed me out, but not enough to make me watch me watch the second just yet.
It's fine on whomever. I like it spelled Shoshannah.

Ah, there's always someone who prefers the other spelling! Thanks!

Shoshana is beautiful, but I don't think it's usable unless you're Jewish, personally. :(
Thank you! From what I gather, it's distinctly tied to the Jewish community in the US, but I think the Jewish community is a lot more prominent in the US than it is in the UK. I can't gauge how strongly tied it is here. Does that make sense?
