When I see old names with tryndee spellings I think its usually due to the parent's being ill-educated and hearing a name but not knowing how to spell. Which would make sense for a name like Chelsea which isn't phonetic.

I see a bit of that in the (French-speaking) area where I live.There's a vogue just now for "English" names, and they are sometimes oddly spelled.
These young parents are not poorly educated, just educated in French. So they hear a name, and write it as they hear it.
