I used to like the name Connor until I met an absolute, total douchebag named Connor in college. And it took forever for people around us to stop insinuating that I was being oversensitive and to finally realize, "Hey, Connor, you know what? You really ARE a douchebag!"
Seriously. And I swear, the dude thought he was Kurt Cobain. His band actually had a half decent "Sappy" cover, though...
Other names I've soured on due to real-life associations:
Margot - I still really like the name (and this spelling, only), but Margot also is the name of perhaps the most egocentric person I've ever met. She's the center of the universe, didn't you know? *eyeroll* That makes me hesitant to use it on a real person. Or a character. For all I know, she might think I named them after her...
Stephanie - Name of a friend throughout primary school. I was actually friends with her and her younger sister, Lisa. Anyway, there was... something wrong with Stephanie. Then again, there was probably something wrong with me, too, if I'm willing to be friends with someone after the try to push me down the stairs (my mom caught me), and succeed in pushing me into my locker. She's also the only person I've ever hit - when we were eight years old, and she was bullying Lisa...
Why the heck was I ever friends with her?!?!
Robyn / Robin (f) - I've never actually met this person, but she was a high school / twenties close friend of my mom. I mentioned to her once that I liked the name Robin for a girl, long time ago, and my mom just barely stopped herself from going ballistic and told me that no grandchild of hers would be named Robin, any spelling. She then told me, a bit reluctantly, about how Robyn was originally going to be her maid of honor when she married my dad (instead of my godmother, Cyndie), but... well, she'd been cheating on her husband, or fiancé (forget which), who left a tape recorder in their car. When he confronted Robyn about the recording, she tried to tell him the guy on the tape was my dad (he was NOT), in order to protect whoever it really was. This was eventually very easy to prove false, and my mom cut Robyn out of her life entirely. So... no Robin for me.
