Josine (and more)
A girl at my school has the name Josine (pronounced yo-SEEN), and I can't find it in the database. Any ideas on what it means? I don't know her ethnicity (and I can't ask her, as she is currently in Germany), but she has blond hair, if that helps...^^;;Also, there's a guy in my textbook whose last name is Miranda; he's Spanish. I've read the Shakespearian etymology; is there a different meaning for the surname?Thankies,

Josine is a contraction of Josephine. The surname of Miranda is found among the Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Jewish (Sephardic), and Italian people. According to my reference source, it's a "habitation name from any of various places so called. The origin of this frequent placename is uncertain. It seems to be from the Latin word "mirandus" (meaning "wondrous, lovely"), but it is also possible that it is used in the sense of a watch-tower or look-out post" (as derived from the Catalan word "miralla", meaning "watch-tower" or "look-out post").-- Nanaea
