Leora
My middle name isn't on this site but it's been in my family for generations. It's Leora, meaning light and I've actually seen it in baby name books before.
Anyone know any other info on this name?

My great-grandmothers' name was Leora and my daughters' name is Emma LeeOra. I researched the name before using it and know that it is in fact Hebrew, and it does in fact mean "whole light". It was said that Leora is all the light there is and that she was who blessed us with light......mythologically. I have always loved this name and believe those who are blessed with it are truly magical and powerful souls. I, aside from the previously mentioned, have met 2 other Leora's and have found this to be true in all of the women. Amazing how well we live up to our names!

Some sites note that Leora is a pet name for Helen. Helen does imply "light, torch" in Greek. This is the only association I can find between Leora and light.

I've seen Leonie as a pet name for Eleanor, and Leora actually makes more sense that way.

Eleanor -- which according to this site may also be related to Helen -- is certainly a more plausible source for Leora :)

It also sounds like Liora, from Lior ("my light"). :)
