But the East Indies were the spice islands! Malaysia and places like that.

I'm used to seeing Amerindian and Native American used pretty interchangeably, but I'm a long way from every kind of Indian so perhaps it wouldn't work either. Surely if you need to disambiguate, Amerindian and Indian or native American and Indian would work better than East Indian - which isn't used now, but has its place in history.
