As an Irish surname Keon is a shortened form of MacKeon, which originally meant "son of Ewan." (See MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland.) I would assume that if you are named after a hockey player, that is the most likely derivation of his given name. There also is a possible Farsi (Persian or Iranian) derivation, and I think the name has also been independently invented in the African-American community as a rhyming form of Deon, but neither of those seems likely for a hockey player. Do you know anything else about this hockey player, such as his surname or nationality, that would help someone to track down the most likely derivation?

Please note that these sites should be treated with caution . . .The majority of "baby name" websites contain vast numbers of inaccuracies and invented meanings. This is because they are simply collections of names gathered together to please parents, and the site creators have little interest in the accuracy of the information they provide, as long as they are getting the number of hits they need to keep their site operational. Meanings found on these sites should always be checked against a reputable source.
