The upshot is that it could be Brythonic for 'Bear' or Gallic for 'stone'...assuming some sort of Anglo-related origin. In Latin however, there's Arto meaning 'to curtail or compress' and in Greek artios meaning 'fit, proper, perfect'. The truth is, shorter names ending in the -ah sound are almost universal and spring up spontaneously in languages around the world with different meanings. Talk to an African linguist and they'll give you one take on this one whereas English speakers will look to UK occurances, Swedes to Scandinavian, etc. Go around the world collecting meanings for your name and then choose the one that suits....or just ask your parents where they got it from ;o)Devon

More likely...More likely Caprice it is a feminine form of Art.

Interestingly enoughArthur likely comes from 'art' meaning bear combined with 'viros' meaning man, or it could be related to Irish 'art' meaning stone.So... when you take the nickname Art from Arthur, and actually name your child Art, does the name still mean 'bear man' or w/e, or just 'bear' now. Because the name Art wasn't derrived from 'art' to mean bear, but from a name meaning bear man... does art, which is the word for bear, really mean bear man?
Kinda philosophical eh?
What's in a name newho:P~SD

What's your origin? Your name may be derived from the Greek word "arthos", which means "bear".
