Becky
Is the name Becky from old Norse Bekkr means "river"?
Replies
Nordic Names cites only one Bekkhildur from the Icelandic Census of 1910, in OE records there is one instance of "Bechilde treu" (Bechild's tree) and another to a place named Bæhildestoc (Baldstock?)
Not in the Top 100, then! Thank you.
Germanic *bakiz occurs rarely in (masculine) names (Bacca, Becca, Bacco etc.)— and Norse bekkr is the western variant, the eastern version is *bækkr. The first name died out early, later toponymic surnames such as Beck and Bach are far more usual.
