Clarus was definitely used as a cognomen in the Roman empire:

And, in fact, there were two 2nd century Roman consuls who bore it, Erucius Clarus and Erucius Clarus II:

Edited to take hyperlinks off of 'Roman' and to fix "1st century" to "2nd" (duh!) :)

Thanks a lot for your help. This answers my question to some degree, so I can at least say: the name CLARUS turns up in the list of Roman consuls in the first (or rather second?) cent. This is something.
