I think any linkage of the name to the Latin word rubens "being red" is a red herring. It is probably taken from the surname of the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens. Coming from Flanders, his surname is a patronymic on the given name Ruben (which is the German and Dutch form of Reuben), so I think the statement on this page is as accurate as it can be.
