Saimi is a Finnish name, pronounced SIGH-mee. It became popular roughly a hundred years ago, and it's not much used these days. Some people say the name has gone through a sort of a small-scale revival along with the other romantic "granny" names, though.
As to the history, some sources link the names Saimi and Saima to the Lake Saimaa in eastern Finland.
