I can't find this name in the database. I know Jostein Gaarder, author of Sophie's World, is Norwegian, but don't know if it's a Norwegian name or not. Does anyone have any info on it?

Yes, it is Norwegian
Jostein is a real old name and it comes from Jor (horse) and Stein (stone).
