Year 0: The beginning
Mark and Nika were married just two and a half weeks ago in a lovely beach ceremony. They met six years ago when Mark was deployed overseas and Nika was one of the reporters covering the area. The two crossed paths several times, but didn't really start a relationship until Mark returned stateside six months later. Nika's tour had been much shorter--just 3 weeks in country. She was already on to the next big news story. They kept in touch and, although their jobs often meant they were on different sides of the country (if not halfway around the world), they grew closer and closer. Mark proposed nine months ago, just before deploying overseas again. By the time he returned, Nika had most of the wedding planned. Mark surprised her by taking her to the Galapagos Islands--a place she's always wanted to visit. Mark is stationed on the West Coast of the United States currently, and Nika was able to put in for a transfer to a branch of the news station she works for in a city close to where Mark is stationed. The two of them found a small suburban home that they like, and are busy making it their home.

Two months into their marriage, Nika caught what she thought was a stomach virus; however, as time went on and she didn't feel much better, she began to suspect otherwise. She found out she was pregnant on their three month anniversary. Mark and Nika's first child, a son, was born six weeks before their first anniversary. Zachary Marcus Murphy was born with a thick head of jet black hair and adorable, big green eyes. Fortunately, Mark has been stateside for the past year, running operations out of the base he is stationed at; however, he does have another deployment coming up in the next 12 to 18 months. He is dreading it, but knows it is necessary. Nika cut down her hours to part-time after Zach was born. As much as she loves working, she loves being a mother more. Even though Zach is eligible to go to daycare at three months old, Nika isn't sure she can let someone else take care of him for an entire day while she's working.

For Nika's thirtieth birthday, Mark got her a brown/white spotted dwarf rabbit that could keep her company during the day. Zach thinks the rabbit is adorable, and Nika has similarly come to enjoy the little animal. Nika named him Cocoa after the color of his spots.
Year 3: Take a Vacation

When Mark got word his deployment was coming, he took Nika and Zach on a two week vacation to the mountains. Nika loves the mountains, and Zach now says he loves them too. Mark and Nika took Zach for nature walks multiple times a day, and spent time hiking and swimming and generally enjoying the wildlife they found. Now that Mark is deployed, Nika and Zach spend a lot of time looking at the photos they took while on vacation.

While Mark was away, Nika added a rather unique animal to the family. She purchased a miniature donkey named Zebra. Nika did a story on a local farm as part of a piece highlighting local little-known businesses. She fell in love with several of the miniature donkeys the farm had. She found out a few months later that the owners were moving due to financial difficulties and managed to get her hands on a miniature donkey she'd seen while she was working the story. Zach loved the little guy right away, and christened him Zebra. Nika wasn't sure where to keep Zebra, but he's acted more like an outside dog than a donkey...and no one has told her she needs to remove him from the backyard where he lives. Mark was surprised when he came home at the end of the year to find a donkey, but Zebra is growing on him too.

Mark and Nika added another animal to their menagerie this year. Mark thought it high time they get a dog. Because of his military contacts, Mark was able to get a dog that had previously served on a K-9 unit. The dog is a ten year old German Shepherd named "Ronnie", who did two tours overseas, but was forced to retire due to arthritis in his knees and a torn ligament. Ronnie gets around well, and is incredibly friendly. Zach loves having a dog to call his own, and he can't wait until he's big enough that Mark will let him hold the leash when they're taking Ronnie for walks.

This year, Mark and Nika welcomed a second little boy into the family. Zach was so excited to hear he was getting a little brother (he talked to "his pets" every day telling them that a new baby brother was coming). Mark and Nika were just happy to have Aaron born safely. Nika went into labor three weeks early, but Aaron seems to have suffered no ill effects. In other family news, Mark was reassigned to another base, still on the West Coast, but further north. He and Nika found a house that is a thirty-minute walk to the ocean, which they love! Zach was swimming in the shallow water within three days. Zebra and Ronnie love the water too (and isn't it a sight to see the family trekking down to the beach with a miniature donkey and German Shepherd in tow). Zach wanted to bring Cocoa along too, but Nika told him she didn't want the poor little rabbit to drown.
Year 7: Job; now working 2 jobs

When Mark's re-enlistment came up this year, he decided not to re-enlist for active duty. After all, he's getting close to forty, and decided he wanted to stick closer to home and see his little guys grow up. After transitioning to reserve duty status, he got a second job as a paramedic, and he's thinking about trying his hand at teaching or coaching high school sports. Nika has been working part-time as a reporter for the past several years, and had been thinking about upping her hours once Zach was at school all day. With Aaron's arrival, that plan changed, and she is now working fewer hours than ever. She wouldn't trade the time with her boys for anything, though.

This year, Mark met his goal of running four marathons in a year. He had wanted to run one in each season for a number of years, and he was able to run four this year. He was exhausted, and Nika was a little worried about his health, but he accomplished his goal. Zach is starting to take after his Daddy, and ran his first 5-K on his 7th birthday while Mark kept pace with him. Nika and Aaron walked the 5K event.

This year, Nika wanted to teach Zach about the importance of helping other people. So, whenever they could, Mark, Nika, Zach, and Aaron volunteered at a local nursing home visiting the patients and entertaining them. The first few weekends they visited, Ronnie made the trip. In the winter; however, the dog caught a virus and then contracted pneumonia. He passed away within a few weeks. Zach and Aaron were devastated, but are learning to move on without their favorite family pet. The nursing home doesn't allow donkeys, or the boys would have brought Zebra along. Now, they're trying to train Cocoa to be a therapy rabbit. Cocoa wants none of it. The family still enjoys spending time together helping others.

Mark and Nika thought their family was complete. They were surprised when Nika found out she was pregnant with her third child! Zach and Aaron both excitedly awaited the new arrival. Baby Peter was born right on his due date. The family is enjoying their new addition and trying to keep up with the rest of life's demands.
