astronomicon's fantastical/mythological NTNB | round .1
Okay, a quick intro - I recently watched this film called What We Do In The Shadows, which is about vampires, just, y'know, bidding on ebay and doing chores. It kind of inspired me to do a mythological-creature/fantastical/magical NTNB with families based off mythological creatures from around the world. Y'know, normal family life for the abnormal.
It's a bit... okay...very dorky, but it should be fun. This first round is a bit of a block of text. The first paragraph(s) for each family introduce them and explain, for example, what a lampad is. You can skip them and go to the bottom of each section for the naming rules for the new arrivals if you want.Errrrmm, I think that's it! I've got a lot of time atm, so I'll probably be able to put new rounds up every few days or so. They won't all be blocks of text, I promise :) Oh, and it you have an questions or are confused about anything, let me know! :)So, yeah, that's it... have fun! :)-------------------
The Østergård-Sigurdsen family
DGf: Kaneq Sigurdsen [26] [Tariaksuq]
DBf: Mathias Johan Østergård [29] [Werewolf]DD/DD: [exp] [Tariaksuq/Werewolf]Dog: [Amorak]The Østergård-Sigurdsen family currently composes itself of Mathias and his girlfriend Kaneq.
Kaneq is of mainly Greenlandic Inuit heritage, with a bit of Danish ancestry, and is a Tariaksuq. A Tariaksuq is a ‘shadow person’. They have dominion over shadows and a ‘shadow realm’ and are invisible to normal human beings – they can only be seen out of the corner of the eye or if they happen to cast a shadow. Apart from that, they are almost like normal people. Kaneq’s whole family and community are the same.
Mathias is a werewolf. He was born a human in Odense to a likewise human Danish father and English mother. Four years ago, while on a roadtrip with some friends, he was bitten by a werewolf. Of course, this turned his life upside down. Unable to control his impulses he moved to the wilderness of Greenland to get his head in order. There he met Kaneq (who was initially surprised he could see her, since she initially thought he was a normal human) and after a rocky start they settled down together. Now they are expecting twin daughters together. Mathias would be lying if he said he wasn’t apprehensive about fatherhood and worried that his children will be werewolves as well, but Kaneq seems to have everything in order. Kaneq wants the children to have Greenlandic first names, which Mathias has reluctantly agreed to with the proviso that they aren’t too long, too difficult to say or too difficult to spell. He likes ‘relatively normal’ names like Naja, but since this is the name of one of Kaneq’s sisters, they don’t want to use it. Kaneq herself would like the name to have an interesting meaning.
Some places to look for names include - http://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Greenlandic_Names
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Greenlandic_given_names
http://www.behindthename.com/submit/names/usage/greenlandicTheir middle names should come from this list - http://www.behindthename.com/top/lists/denmark/2013. Mathias would like them to be fitting for twins – so he wants them to have the same kind of ‘vibe’, begin with the same letter, or be alphabetical (eg, one starts with L, the other with M, etc). They have also recently got a pet puppy. He is actually an amarok puppy – amaroks are huge wolves from Inuit mythology known for their cunning. He’s desperately in need of a name because they can’t keep on calling him ‘Dog’. They disagree about his name – Mathias wants to call him a name meaning ‘wolf’ or ‘big’ – because he is going to grow to be a big “dog”. Kaneq wants to call him after a wolf god/character/mythological beast, from any culture, preferably a Nordic, Inuit or Native American one. ~~The Morgan family
DW: Mélissaire Vivienne Morgan (nee Tolbert) [31] [Witch]
DH: Zebulon Benedict Morgan “Zeb” [31] [Witch]DD: Zéolie Carmelite Morgan [7] [Witch]
DD: [exp] [Witch]Over in America, Mélissaire and Zeb are expecting a daughter as well. Both parents are witches – Mélissaire comes from a long line of folksy, nature-y swamp witches, Zeb is a pretty run of the mill male witch with no real specialisms. Mélissaire’s family is pretty solidly based in Louisiana Creole culture, whilst Zeb is pretty much a mix of various European ancestries and was raised in a small rural town. They met via mutual friends. Mélissaire is very rooted in the magical/mythical community, whilst Zeb keeps his witching on a need-to-know-basis and holds down a safe and boring desk job in the human community as well.Mélissaire has a daughter from a previous relationship, Zéolie. Zeb adopted her as his daughter when he married Mélissaire three years ago. Now they’re expecting a second daughter of their own.
Mélissaire would like her second daughter’s name to be Louisiana Creole (http://www.behindthename.com/submit/names/usage/louisiana-creole) , and Zeb, not being in the position to reject unusual names, agrees. He likes feminine, delicate names, though, so would rather that the name wasn’t anything too harsh. They’ve agreed that they’d like a flower/plant name for the middle name – one that isn’t ridiculously unique and unusual, but which also hasn’t been in the US top500 in recent years.~~The Tsekhanovetsky family
DH: Dmitriy L’vovich Tsekhanovetsky “Dima” [33] [Necromancer]
DW: Orphne Tsekhanovetskaya [32] [Lampad]DS: [exp] [Lampad/Necromancer]Lastly are the newlywed Tsekhanovetskys. Although Dmitriy is from a small village in Siberia and Orphne is of very old, very established Greek descent, they met and married and currently live in London, UK. Dmitriy has spent most of his life being chased out of towns and villages between here and Siberia because of his and his family’s nefarious magical practices – like his forefathers, Dima is a necromancer, and it has its fair share of infamy. Orphne is a lampad, a kind of nymph which guards graveyards. Although her parents were originally guarding Greek graveyards, they gradually moved and grew attached to a graveyard far from home. Needless to say, Orphne and Dima met among the gravestones, a most unlikely setting. They’ve been married for just over 6 months and are expecting their first child, a boy.
They both want his first name to be Russian with a greek origin (eg, Aleksandr), and his middle name to have a dark or morbid meaning in Greek (Greek mythological figures would be a good place to look for inspiration). His second middle name should be the patronymic Dmitriyevich. He should have a nickname which works both in Russian and English.
