Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek verb ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend" as well as "to help" combined with the Greek noun ῥοή (rhoe) meaning "river, stream". Also compare the Greek noun ῥόος (rhoos) meaning "stream, flow of water, current" as well as the name Alexirrhoia, which are both closely related.

In Greek mythology, Alexirrhoe is one of the many wives of king Priam of Troy.
