Meaning & History

Adoption of the name of the city of Annecy, the prefecture and largest city of the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of Southeastern France. It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 kilometres (22 mi) south of Geneva, Switzerland and is generally nicknamed the "Pearl of French Alps". The toponym Annecy was first recorded in 1107, while in the 9th century it was recorded under its Latin name Anericiacum, which is ultimately derived from a Germanic given name Anerīk or Annarigus and the Gaulish suffix -acum which used to denote property.
