Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek adjective ἀριστόλοχος (aristolochos) meaning "well-born", which consists of the Greek adjective ἄριστος (aristos) meaning "best" combined with the Greek noun λόχος (lochos) meaning "childbirth" as well as "ambush". Through the latter meaning, the word later came to signify a tactical sub unit of the ancient Greek army. It is the connection to combat and the military that usually made the ancient Greeks want to incorporate the word into given names (see names like Amphilochos, Astylochos and Hippolochos), but in some cases an exception was made, and this name is one of them.
