I really like the sound of Arlen. It makes a great name, in my opinion. The only problem I see is that it sounds slightly feminine.

It could come from the Irish word for "pledge" which I recall as being spelled something like "airlean". (I probably messed that up terribly.)

I have known two people named Arlen, one male and one female. To me, the name Arlen looks masculine, but sounds feminine. For a girl, Arlyn would probably be a better choice as it looks and sounds more feminine than Arlen.
