From the Japanese meaning of the name, the famous video game company Atari is synonymous with the name in the realms of video games and 1980's pop culture, most well known for the creation of the 1972 arcade game Pong and their home games console the Atari 2600, Atari also released other systems like the 16-Bit handheld Atari Lynx and the companies competing console with the Nintendo NES and Sega Master System, Atari 7800, other Atari consoles include: 5200, Jaguar, 2021 VCS (not to be confused with the 2600) and the Atari ST, Portfolio and 8-bit line of home computers.In 1984 Atari was split off into two different companies, Atari Games (The Arcade game division known for their subsidiary Tengen) and Atari Corporation (The home console and computer division) which lead to the case of many Atari Games arcade titles appearing on rival home consoles and not Atari Corporation's 2600 or 7800 consoles in the 1980's. Atari Games was dissolved and its assets went to Time Warner and Atari Corporation living on today as Atari Interactive who released the 2021 VCS console and the 2600/7800 compatible console the Atari 2600+, they also publish games for their legacy hardware and on other contemporary systems.
The name Atari likely originates from a Japanese term in the board game Go, the meaning of Atari in Japanese is "to hit a target" and is associated with good fortune, often said by Japanese speakers when they are dealt good luck in a situation.
