Comments for BLOSSOM:

In the early 90's there was the sitcom "Blossom", starring Mayim Bialik as the girl with the name.

Reasons to name your child Blossom:
1. You are the #1 fan of the Power Puff Girls and your first two daughters were already named Bubbles and Buttercup in honor of the cartoon.

2. Flowerchild syndrome. It explains a lot of things, but it shouldn't be taken out on your offspring.

Again, TV has ruined a possible contender for a great name. Maybe in a couple generations it will be a good name for a person. Maybe.

I named my first parakeet Blossom, but I don't think I would name a child that.

"Blossom" could have a nameday on Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter) is the day of flowers and willows (the names of the other trees also have a nameday).

"Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, have dedicated their lives, to fighting crime, and the forces, of EVIL!"

Sorry, Powerpuff Girls is the first thing that comes into my head, although that doesn't happen with "bubbles" or "buttercup". Probably because "Blossom" is the first name that's always said by the narrator, so she starts the intro off. Can't associate the name with anything else, but on the bright side--she was my favorite Powerpuff Girl! The smart, ice-breath blowing, redheaded leader. There are much worse things to share a name with.

Powerpuff Girl is the only thing I think of when I hear this name.

Well, there's no guarantee that the Powerpuff Girls will still be watched several years from now, but I kind of hope it will, as it turned into a guilty pleasure for me back in 2006 and I found it hilarious, ha ha. Just in case the Powerpuff Girls does turn into a classic viewed for decades to come, this name will sound pretty damn strange. But it sounds strange as it is. It really is quite literally a flowery name, and the whole blossoming thing makes people think of youth and being ''unfinished'', so the name is terrible for a girl past puberty. Oh, and speaking of puberty, the girl might get tacky jokes about *blossoming*. Not recommended.

Blossom Rock was one of the stage names of Edith Marie Blossom MacDonald (1895-1978). She's most well-known for her role as Grandmama in The Addams Family.

I usually like flower names, but Blossom sounds silly as a given name. It makes me think of the Powerpuff Girls. I loved the cartoon, though, and at least it doesn't sound as bad as Buttercup or especially Bubbles.

In an historical novel I was reading, the main guy's sister was rattling off names of potential brides, and she came across "Lady Blossom Tremaine." The guy says, "I don't like her name" as a reason why he can't marry her. The sister insists that that's not Blossom's fault, but the guy explains (something like this): "I can't have a wife named Blossom, I'll feel like I'm calling the cow in every night!"

I laughed for, I don't know, about a good five minutes. I could never curse a kid with this name.

I would normally think of this type of name (Precious, Treasure, Princess, etc.) as tacky, but something seems to appeal to me about Blossom. I think it feels feels soft, light, and delicate, and also very sweet and literally flowery. And as for the Powerpuff Girls thing, I haven't watched that show in years and remember very little about it, so the association doesn't bother me.

W.H.L. Wallace, one of the finest Union Generals during the American Civil War, had a daughter-- Isabel-- whom he and his wife affectionately referred to as Blossom, as evidenced in their correspondence prior to his fatal injury at the Battle of Shiloh. Isabel later published a biography of her father, together with her parents' letters.

Blossom Dearie was an American jazz singer and pianist.

I don't think I'd ever put Blossom on a birth certificate, but it would make a cute, affectionate "pet" name/nickname for for a girl with a more serious flower name, like Iris or Violet.
