Older Catalan and Provençal form of Boniface.

Notable people include anti-Jewish writer Bonafos Caballeria, born Jewish in the early 15th century. He converted to Christianity and won the favour of Queen Maria of Aragon and Naples, and was murdered in 1464.

Astruc Bonafos Caylar is listed in the index of known Jews in late-mediaeval France in Rabbi Heinrich Gross' book, "Gallia Judaica".
