Meaning & History
Means "copper, bronze" in Greek. It is the name currently used in English to refer to a town on the Greek island of Euboea, called Χαλκίδα (Chalkida) in modern Greek, and the Ancient Greek name of the same town. The name also referred to a Naiad nymph inhabiting a spring at the same location in mythology. She was a daughter of the Boeotian river-god Asopos and the Arcadian nymph Metope, and was abducted by Poseidon.
