Obviously the name means a large settlement of clay. But clay is a rock used for many health benefits. Bentonite clay can save you from food poisoning. Indians used to carry a pouch of it to eat when they ate bad food. I feel like it means pure in a way.

Actually, Texas has WAAAY more counties than Georgia. Clayton is also a county in Alabama. As far as famous people go, I'm surprised no one has said Clayton Moore, the American actor who played the Lone Ranger on the television series of the same name. It ran from 1949-1957.
