Meaning & History

Derived from Nahuatl copilli, a kind of conical hat or headpiece. This was the name of a figure of Aztec mythology, a son of Malinalxochitl who sought revenge for his mother’s abandonment by her people. He was killed and his heart thrown into a lake, where it grew into a nopal, or prickly pear cactus.
