Danish variant of Dorit, a short form of Dorothea, also used as an English name according to Dunkling & Gosling (1983), who observe: 'Primarily a surname deriving either from Durward or Dorothy. Made famous by Charles Dickens in his novel 'Little Dorrit' (1855-7) and first-name usage probably derives from it. Dorrit, Doritt and Dorit have all been used as first names, as have Dorita and Doritha.'
