Hideous, harsh sounding, old fashioned name.
I feel like this name is a very handsome name; I don’t understand why some hate it. In my opinion, I prefer Douglas without a nickname, but Doug sounds cool to me. I’d be happy if this were my middle name, instead of my actual one (which, also begins with D).
I feel that Douglas is a very classic strong name. I do agree though that Doug is not the best nickname. I can't believe all the haters out there! Probably low self esteem. I was on a phoneline with AT&T tech support and the tech was obviously from India, He asked my name and I told him Doug Wolf, His reply "Dog Woof, How do you spell that DUG WOF?" I will always remember that fondly. My full name is Douglas Jay Wolf and I am very proud/ happy with it. A good strong name, Doug not so much.
Sounds like Dog-Less.
I think that Douglas would make a fine name for the right sort of person. If there is an individual that can carry this moniker with an air of confidence, then I say kudos to you for living up to such elevated standards.
A name that only suits a 70 year old. And the nickname Doug is not flattering or pleasant, either in the way it is written or the way it is pronounced.
I love the name Douglas! I can imagine a chubby baby Douglas, a cool teenage Douglas, a rugged man Douglas, and a wise grandpa Douglas. The meaning dark river is so mysterious and cool, and I love the nature connection. Doug is fine, and Douggie is so cute for a kid.
Are you kidding me? This name is ugly.
Douglas is a great name, but the nickname Doug is just awful.
Douglas is a strong name and sounds hot and multi-talented, like someone with ripped abs, a chiseled jawline and cool tattoos who is also super smart, someone who could help you survive in the extreme wilderness and who would also know how to order you an espresso in Rome like a native.
A name that's so dorky yet so edgy at the same time.
My name is awesome. I have lived with it for my entire life. I don't mind Douglas, and I don't mind "Doug". It is my name as it was my father's before me.
I don't particularly like the name Douglas, but it's not the worst name in the world. I would much rather be a Douglas than an Aiden or a Jacob. I know a Douglas and he's exactly how people on this thread describe him like, a little dorky, a little boring but generally he's a pretty alright guy. We often hate names because we associate them with somebody who we don't like. For example, if you've got loads and loads of problems with a guy called Steve you'll automatically find yourself hating the name Steve.
Kirstino, spouse, and I wanted to name our child a name with D that nobody really has. Kirstino excitedly came and said, Douglas! I was a little disappointed. Douglas is unattractive, Doug is not a good nickname and it is too mature in a boring and unrefined way. So, I explained and just before delivery, I found Demetrius. It was unique and we turned it into Demetrios. There were so many possible nicknames and we thought it would make a great deal.We personally prefer other names over Douglas. This paragraph belongs to my first cousin and it was her typed impression and it is real and factual. We felt the same way too. And now after Kirstino and her delivery, I am glad to have a 6 year old cousin Demetrios, which we call Demio and Demmy for now, since he is extremely young.
Douglas can also be used as a feminine name, but it actually can’t.[JUST KIDDING](:
It was originally a female name in the 1500’s, but then it became a masculine name. Normally male names are supposed to become feminine, but in this case, it’s vice versa. Douglas sounds really unattractive for a girl. I don’t even like the name for a boy. It’s just not a good name.
The greatest name ever!
We named our son Douglas Erik Bror (We're from Sweden), we really liked the name when we came across it and we had no bad memories with someone named that. We don't know many that have that name, which made it more appealing to us.
I like this name but for some reason I'm not crazy about the diminutive, "Doug". I much prefer Douglas.
Aside from all of these comments saying that this name is "boring" or "dull" I think Douglas is a great name. It might not be the "coolest" name out there, but I think it's more interesting than all those trendy names out there like Asher, Logan, Ethan, Jayden etc... Also, why comment on a name you don't like? I don't see any point in that. Personally, I like the sound of it and think it's refreshing to hear once in a while.
I actually like Douglas, but not Doug, so probably would never name a boy this because people would at some point start calling him Doug no matter what. Maybe Douglas could be a good middle name, though.
I find this name a tad too dull.
I actually kind of like Doug now. I think it would sound refreshing on a little boy. Dougie is a cute nickname too =) I agree completely with the comments saying this name would be nice to hear amongst all the names that really are boring these days, classics never get boring. Trendy names do, and very quickly.
I find it funny that many people have such a negative impression of this name, although I didn't care much for it for a long time. Then my boss/professor/mentor, a Douglas, changed my perspective on it. He's intelligent, sensitive, interesting, and a poet. He is actually a bit dorky and socially awkward, but he's an excellent man. I would rather name my son this name than any trendy name.
I like Douglas, but not so much Doug.
This is a fantastic name, it will be my second son's name if I ever have one. It is not at all boring as I see it. If I was going through a list of recent births, names like Aidan, Kai, Liam and Jett would have me snoring, but Douglas would really stand out in a good way. And dark river seems like such a poetic meaning.
I used to not like it but now I think it's really cool! I just don't like the nickname Doug. Yuck.
Douglas is a nice name. It's strong and classic. The only problem with it is the nickname Doug, which I despise!
I like this name quite a bit. I see other people call it boring, well, it is nothing of the sort, it's way better to be a Douglas in the world of Jacobs and Nicks! If anything, those names are boring, not Douglas! So if you like Douglas, go ahead and use it!
I have always found this name to be overwhelmingly dorky.
Gross. I hate the way this name sounds.
If you do not like a name, you don't have to totally trash the name. Why take the time to comment if you find the name so repugnant anyway? Besides, the meaning is pretty cool. I'd name my son Douglas over Jayden, Aiden, or any fad name.
Snooooze...Boring...Snooooze.
