Scripts Εὐφρόνιος(Ancient Greek)

Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from Greek ευ (eu) meaning "good, well". The second element is derived from either the Greek noun φρόνις (phronis) meaning "prudence, wisdom" or the Greek verb φρονέω (phroneo) meaning "to think" as well as "to be minded". Both words are ultimately derived from the Greek noun φρήν (phren) meaning "midriff" as well as "mind, intellect, wits". In short, you could say that the name Euphronios is basically a more elaborate form of Euphron.

This name was borne by an ancient Greek vase painter and potter who was active in Athens in the late 6th and early 5th centuries BC. Euphronios was one of the most important artists of the red-figure technique. His works place him at the transition from Late Archaic to Early Classical art.
