Meaning & History

Derived from the name of a til tree (species Ocotea foetens) that was considered sacred by the indigenous inhabitants of El Hierro, Canary Islands. The name comes from Guanche gărăw, which later mutated to garoe, meaning "lake, river".

In Guanche legend, the leaves of the Garoé were capable of capturing and distilling the water from the mists, being the main source of water for the aborigines.
