Meaning & History

Meaning unknown. Gatag is a water spirit in Ossetian mythology and the father of Syrdon in the Nart epics. Since he was the ruler of water, he could cut off the Narts' water supply at any time he desired, but he chose to befriend them instead. Though the Narts respected Gatag, they came to prefer the water god Donbettyr over time.
