This name means "brave spearman" and is an Irish version of Gerard.

It's pronounced similarly to "ga-road" (but with a slender D), so it's unlikely anyone would think of "roids" upon hearing it.

Gearoid... quite the handsome, interesting find!The "-roid" reminds me of "steroid," though-- but I doubt that would occur to most. I don't think that it is enough of a concern, anyway, to discourage someone from using it.
Actually the name is generally used in Ireland as the equivalent of Gerard (popular in Ireland because of St Gerard Majella who is patron saint of expectant women). Gerald is comparatively rare in Ireland. [noted -ed]
