Meaning & History

From the archaic English adjective gynecian meaning "of women, relating to women, womanly", a derivative of Greek γυνή (gyne) "woman". This is the name of the duchess of Arcadia and mother of Pamela in Sir Philip Sidney's poem The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia (ca. 1593).
