Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek ‘Ηφαιστος (Hephaistos), meaning unknown. It probably shares its origin with the Minoan city of Φαιστος (Phaistos). In Greek mythology Hephaestus was the god of fire and forging, the husband of the unfaithful Aphrodite. It is said that when he was born Hera, his mother, was so displeased with his physical deformities that she hurled him off the top of Mount Olympus.
