From the Greek ‘Ηφαιστος (Hephaistos), meaning unknown. In Greek mythology he was the god of fire and forging, the husband of the unfaithful Aphrodite. It is said that when he was born Hera, his mother, was so displeased with his physical deformities that she hurled him off the top of Mount Olympus.
