Herbert George Wells, better known as H G Wells, was a science fiction author just before the turn of the 20th century. He is made famous for THE TIME MACHINE, THE INVISIBLE MAN and WAR OF THE WORLDS.
Herbert, along with its pet forms, sounds grandad-ish to me, in the same way that Gertrude, along with its own pet form Gertie, makes me think of old ladies.
I've read some pretty immature things on this site, but under this name, I see no mention of Herbert Garrison, the homosexual teacher of South Park. Duhh.
The name has, not one, but two long schwa sounds, so it's not exactly a beautiful name. It's also very old-fashioned, and I'd probably burst a vein in my head laughing if I heard a parent shout: ''Herbert, it's time to go!'' It would sound quite pompous and pretentious, not to mention quite geeky, on a child today, and I hate the nickname Herbie.
Probably says something about me (mostly that I'm a nerd) but this will *permanently* be associated with Herbert von Krolock from the musical Tanz der Vampire.
A famous Herbert in the German-speaking world is the German singer Herbert Grönemeyer, born 12th April 1956. He was the first foreign language artist to record an MTV Unplugged set, and also appeared in the film Das Boot.
H. P. Lovecraft wrote a short story titled "Herbert West - Reanimator" about a doctor obsessed with resurrecting the dead. It is notable as one of the first depictions of zombies as corpses arising, through scientific means, as uncontrollably violent cannibalistic creatures. A movie based on the story, called "Re-Animator", was produced in 1983.
