From Odierne, an Old French form of a Germanic name possibly composed of the elements od "riches, wealth, fortune" and gern "eager, desiring" (Gothic gairns), the spelling presumably altered to resemble Latin hodierna "of today, present, existing now". This was the name of the 12th-century Crusader princess Hodierna of Jerusalem, a sister of Queen Melisende.
