Ima, in Spanish speaking countries is short for Imaculada Concepcion (the Immaculate Conception) which is a venerated feast day of the Virgin Mary. This feast celebrates "her" conception without sin, as the perfect vessel which would nurture and protect the infant Jesus in her "unstained" by original sin, womb. Other variants of the name are: Macu, Divina, Divi, Conchine, Concha, Concepcion.
Ima Sumaq is the name of an princess in the Inca theatre drama Ollantay. Her name means "How Beautiful!" in Quechua. (Ima means "how" and sumaq means "beautiful, excellent".)
I always thought Ema was a beautiful name when I thought it was pronounced "EE-muh." But now that I know Ema is simply pronounced "Emma," I now love Ima. To the person who commented about being named "Ima Pig" or "Ima Worm," I don't think there would be teasing, as I do believe the name is "ee-muh" rather than "eye-muh." This is a simple, beautiful name that I LOVE.
