There are two main theories on the meaning of this name. It could figuratively mean "young woman" from Arabic جَرَى (jarā) meaning "to run, to flow" (referring to a girl reaching maturity). Alternatively, it could be from an Arabic name for the Damask rose, ورد جوري (ward jūrī), which itself is from گور (Gōr), the Middle Persian name for the Iranian city of Firuzabad (in that sense, it would mean "rose of Firuzabad", based on the speculation that that particular rose was once found in the city). Juwayriyya bint al-Harith was a wife of the Prophet Muhammad.
