Kim is Welsh and an ancient name meaning noble.
In the 1936 version of the movie Showboat, a baby born on the Mississippi is named Kim after the K in Kentucky, the I in Illinois and the M in Missouri. Curiously, the name Kim first appears on the popularity graph on this site at exactly the same time as this movie's release. [noted -ed]
This name was also used in Russia by Soviet parents after the October Revolution. In that case, Kim was not short for Kimberly, it was an acronym of "Kommunistichesky International Molodyozhi", meaning "Youth Communist International".
Cyne (from which Kim is derived) is Old English meaning Royal.
