Name derived from Lucia. Comes from the Latin "lux" / "light", celebrating on 13 December. Saint Lucia was martyred in Syracuse, Sicily, on December 13, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. This happened around the year 290.
At St. Lucia, is celebrated the festival of light, in the Scandinavian countries.
I just heard that a Romani (gypsy) variant of this name is Luminitsa. This is making me wonder if perhaps Luminita should be spelled Luminiţa as that would be pronounced the same as Luminitsa. There are a lot of Roma (gypsies) living in Romania.
