Maggie "the cat" is one of the main characters in the Tennessee Williams play "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", played by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1958 film adaptation.
I once made up a limerick about this name, and it had the words baggy and shaggy in it.

Maggie sounds like Maggot and just isn't nice to look at. I dislike it greatly.

A famous bearer is actress Maggie Wheeler (b. August 7, 1961). She auditioned for the role of Monica Geller on the American sitcom "Friends" (1994-2004), but ended up playing Janice, Chandler Bing's on-again, off-again girlfriend. She also auditioned for the role of Debra Barone in the CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" (1996-2005). She did however end up playing the recurring role of Debra's friend, Linda.
I like the name Maggie. It's one of my favorites for a girl. Technically it is short for Margaret, but I would name my daughter Magdalene and use Maggie as her nickname.
This was the name of the dog I had when I was a teenager. My sisters and I named her after the song "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart. I've known a human Maggie and I liked her. In spite of this, I've always felt that this was the worst nickname for Margaret. I guess because, as the other posters have pointed out, it makes me think of "maggot".
The Fischer quintuplets are born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the world's fourth surviving set of quints and the first in the United States. Jimmie, Cathy, Margie, Mary Ann and Maggie join five other siblings and are joined by a single baby sister, Cindy, born September 24, 1964.
My own name is Maggie. It's short for Margaret, though the only people who ever call me that are just trying to be a pain. I love my name, personally. It's not overused, and I think it's cute. Although, other pains find it funny to use insults according to the name such as Miggie (don't ask), or Maggot. Although I really hate the name Margaret, my middle name would sound stupid next to Maggie. Margaret Alice sounds much better than Maggie Alice.
Ugh, I'm sorry to say that this name both sounds and looks awful. No reason in particular, but it just seems plain ugly. No offense to all the Maggies out there!
In my opinion, this name is ugly. No offense to anyone with the name, but it doesn't sound right. It's more suitable as a nickname, even though I hate it as that too. I hate the nicknames Gabby & Maggie, especially as names!

I've always had problems with people not believing my name was Maggie on my birth cert! I've never minded it as I was always the only Maggie in school. I was called after my grandma and it's a name most used for dogs and in made for tv movies ha! But as I get older I don't mind it too much and I love Rod Stewart's Maggie May, puts me in a good mood usually! Sad to see all the negative press about it!

I really like the name Maggie, but only as a nickname. I like it best as a nickname for Margaret, but it would also work for Magdalene or Magnolia. I just think that once Maggie's an adult, she needs a more professional name to use.

I agree with the comment above. Maggie as a full name sounds a little unprofessional, but I love it as a nickname for Margaret. If I named my daughter Margaret, I'd probably call her Maggie or Mae as a nickname, although I think the name Margaret is really pretty on its own :)
The main character of the show "Maggie & the Ferocious Beast" [for 8 and under] is named Maggie, a red haired girl with a white and red trimmed safari hat, [with a map under it] a denim jumper yellow shirt and socks and shiny Mary-Janes.

Maggie is short for both Magdalene, Magdalen, and Margaret.

Could also be a nickname for Magdalene (and other forms).
