Derived from the Old Irish name Mael Maedoc meaning "disciple of Saint Maedoc". Maedoc or M'Áedhóg, also known as Saint Áedán of Ferns, was a 7th-century Irish bishop. This name has been traditionally used in the Yorkshire area of Britain.
